10 Things You Should Buy Before You Go to Disney

So You Don’t Overpay in the Parks!

If you’re heading to Walt Disney World soon, especially with little ones, being prepared can make a big difference. Disney does a great job offering convenience, but that convenience often comes with a high price tag.

As a Disney travel planner, and a mom of two young kids, I always recommend families pack a few necessities that can save you money in the parks. Here are some of the best things to buy in advance so you’re ready for the parks, and don’t end up paying double once you're there.

1. Autograph Book and Pen

Character meet-and-greets are back, and having an autograph book ready saves you money and time. Add a clickable pen or marker that won’t get lost easily.

2. Reusable Water Bottles

Skip buying bottled, and opt to bring your own water bottles. Disney has refill stations, but I recommend stopping at Quick Service locations throughout the park for free cups of (ice cold) water. Bringing your own water bottle is both convenient and cost-effective.

3. Disney-Themed Outfits and Ears

We typically buy all of our outfits and ears ahead of time. You will typically save money, just make sure for the outfits you read reviews, because it could be a lower quality outfit. For the ears, you can find cute ones online, and you can even get personalized ones from Etsy. I find that I like the ones online better, because even though they may not be the same quality, they are much lighter, meaning I can wear them longer without getting a headache.

4. Light-Up Toys or Glow Sticks

If you plan to watch nighttime shows or parades, these are great to have on hand. Kids will want something glowing once they see others with it, and what’s sold in the parks is expensive.

5. Small Toys or Activities for Line Waits

Even with Lightning Lane, you’ll still wait in some lines. Having something small can help pass the time. Some of our go-to items are stickers, fidget spinners, or even small lollipops or candy. We also usually bring bubble wands as a fun activity to do if we are utilizing rider swap.

6. Disposable Ponchos and Stroller Cover

Afternoon rain is almost a guarantee in Florida during the summer. Grab a multi-pack of ponchos ahead of time, you’ll save money and stay dry without hauling around bulky rain gear. Also bring a stroller cover - most stroller parking is outside and uncovered, so even if you go inside to wait out the storm, chances are your stroller will have to wait in the rain.

7. Toddler-Friendly Snacks

You’re allowed to bring your own food into the parks, and this is one of the best ways to avoid meltdowns or long snack lines. Bring snacks your kids are used to, some of our favorites are Uncrustables, goldfish, applesauce pouches, and granola bars.

8. Noise-Canceling Headphones

Some toddlers get overwhelmed by loud sounds, especially during fireworks or indoor rides. A pair of headphones can make those experiences much more comfortable.

9. Stroller Identifier

There are a lot of strollers in the parks, and they often get moved around by Cast Members. Use a bright tag, ribbon, or even a luggage handle wrap to spot yours easily.

10. MagicBand or Waterproof Card Holder

You can link park tickets to a MagicBand or use a card. Either way, having a hands-free option like a wristband or lanyard makes entry and PhotoPass access much easier. While you can easily buy Magic Bands in the park, if you check the Disney website, you can find the ones that are on sale. You'll also have a full selection of bands offered, instead of the limited inventory that may be in that particular shop.

A little prep goes a long way at Disney, especially when traveling with toddlers. Buying these items ahead of time will not only save you money, but also help you feel more prepared and less stressed during your trip.
